The future of Our Land

So here we are, more than a month has passed since we released Our Land. Now feels like a good time to look at how everything went, and let you know what comes next.

First of all we’d like to thank you all. The response to Our Land has been truly wonderful. We got featured on the front page and we’re currently sitting at 18k views and 3k downloads. While we don’t yet have other games to compare to, to us it feels like quite a feat.

At the moment we’re going through the profiles of those who contacted us to join the team. We’re hoping to have a sound designer and a graphic designer hired by February.

Submissions are open till the end of January, so if you’d like to work with us, better make it quick.

Job Details

We’ve had the chance to receive many comments and some good feedback regarding both strengths and weaknesses of the prototype as it stands. This is exactly what we needed to move to the next step.

As you may know, the plan is to turn Our Land into a complete game. With the prototype completed and feedback received. We’ll rebuild the game from scratch for a better code structure and workflow to add content to the game. As such there will be no further work done on the prototype.

We’re planning on at least two years to develop the complete game. While this feature list isn’t complete nor set in stone, it should give you an idea of the scope:

  • 8 Biomes. Each with their plants, and gameplay quirks.
  • A unique tribe inhabiting each Biome, along with their quest to complete.
  • Multiple tribes to unlock and play as, each with their unique game mechanics.
  • Unique plants in each Biome and interesting way to combine them.
  • Roguelight elements: random pool of plants, biome locations, events shaking things up... generated each run

The team has been working on this project for more than a year without any income. To fully dedicate ourselves to the game and still be able to cover living costs, we’re currently trying to find a publisher to fund the development. This should keep us busy for the next two month, but we might make a jam game along the way.

As a player there’s quite a lot you can do to help us make it to a complete game.

While we had many downloads, we could use more answers to our gameplay survey. It would help us pinpoint specific aspects to focus on.
There’s no personal info and it takes about 3 minutes to complete.

Our discord community has been growing a fair bit and is the best place to be in direct contact with us, and other people who also enjoyed the game. We plan on openly discussing the game features there. So if you want to have an impact and help shape Our Land, it’s definitely the place to be.

Lastly, you can of course share the game with your friends and family. The itch page will be sent to potential publishers, the more visits we have, the better it is. You know how the internet works.

If you’ve made it this far, I thank you for reading the whole post and being interested in our game. Have a papercraft mushroom.
